Cowboys Legend Troy Aikman Sells the Super Bowl XXVII Jersey He Last Wore for a “Record Price” to Support Teammate Battling Parkinson’s Disease

DALLAS One of the most iconic pieces of memorabilia in Dallas Cowboys history is being put toward a mission bigger than football, as legend Troy Aikman has decided to sell his famous Super Bowl XXVII jersey to support a former teammate who is facing the toughest battle of his life.

The white No. 8 jersey is the very uniform Aikman wore during the Cowboys’ memorable 52–17 victory over the Buffalo Bills on January 31, 1993, a performance that helped restore Dallas to the top of the NFL.

Aikman completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and four touchdown passes, earning Super Bowl XXVII MVP honors while leading one of the greatest performances in franchise history.
How Does Troy Aikman Define Himself? He Doesn't, and Science Says Neither Should You

Decades later, the jersey that witnessed one of the greatest moments of the Cowboys dynasty is now being used by Aikman to help Michael Irvin, the teammate with whom he shared countless unforgettable victories.

Irvin is battling Parkinson’s disease, a challenge completely different from anything he ever faced on the football field.

Aikman said his decision to sell the jersey was not driven by the financial value of the item, but by the difference it could make for someone who stood beside him throughout the Cowboys’ championship years.

“We stood side by side for so many years. He is part of some of the greatest memories of my football life. Now, as he fights an opponent tougher than any hit we ever faced on the field, I want this jersey to fight for him too, just like he once fought for Dallas cowboys”

Aikman’s Super Bowl XXVII jersey was recently sold privately for $1.515 million, a figure described as a record price for an NFL game-worn jersey.

That number is especially remarkable because the same jersey was previously sold for $720,000 just a few years earlier, meaning its value has more than doubled.

But for Aikman, the record price represents something much more meaningful than a collectible milestone.

He wants it to become a symbol of loyalty, friendship and the brotherhood that helped define one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history.

Michael Irvin was one of the Cowboys’ most dominant wide receivers during the 1990s, feared throughout the league for his toughness, leadership and ability to deliver in the biggest moments.

Together, Aikman and Irvin helped Dallas capture three Super Bowl championships, creating one of the most successful quarterback-receiver partnerships professional football has ever seen.

For Aikman, those memories made their relationship something far greater than simply quarterback and receiver.

“This jersey once represented championships, pressure and unforgettable moments,” Aikman shared. “If it can represent hope today, I cannot imagine a better purpose for it.”

According to the scenario, the proceeds will be used to support Irvin during his treatment while also contributing to research programs and assistance for former NFL players battling neurological diseases.

The reaction throughout Cowboys Nation quickly became emotional, with many supporters describing Aikman’s decision as another example of the brotherhood that still connects the legends of Dallas decades after their playing careers ended.

For a franchise built by icons such as Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Larry Allen, the story serves as a reminder that the strongest bonds are never measured only by championships.

The No. 8 jersey that helped deliver one of the greatest Super Bowl performances in Cowboys history now carries an entirely different meaning.

It no longer represents only four touchdown passes, an MVP trophy or a championship victory.

Today, it represents friendship, loyalty and the belief that even decades after the final whistle, the men who built the Cowboys dynasty continue to stand beside one another when it matters most.

Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer Weighs Releasing $52 Million Starter Amid Attitude Concerns to Create Cap Flexibility
DALLAS, Texas — As the Dallas Cowboys enter a critical roster-building stretch, difficult decisions are beginning to surface. This time, the spotlight turns to an under-the-radar offensive contributor who has quietly fought for a role inside Dallas’ system. Sources close to the situation indicate that head coach Brian Schottenheimer is seriously evaluating whether the Cowboys should reconsider the future of running back Phil Mafah. The issue reportedly goes beyond pure effort. While Mafah has earned respect for his physical running style, toughness, and willingness to compete for difficult yards, questions about scheme fit and long-term roster balance have raised internal debate. Dallas is not treating the situation as a simple performance conversation. It is about identity. Roster flexibility. Offensive direction. And whether every running back on the roster still matches what the Cowboys want their offense to become. Mafah entered Dallas as a young back who understood that virtually every opportunity would have to be earned through patience and persistence. He was never handed a secure role. He was never treated like a guaranteed future star. But his powerful frame and downhill running style gave the Cowboys an intriguing developmental option in a competitive backfield. That physicality has provided Mafah opportunities to show what he can offer when Dallas needs a runner capable of attacking between the tackles. His ability to absorb contact and continue moving forward gives him characteristics that can become valuable in short-yardage situations. However, the Cowboys are now studying every roster spot with a colder eye. The franchise understands that flexibility can open doors before final cuts, waiver claims, and late-summer trade discussions. Moving on from a young player like Mafah would not be a simple decision. It would come with risk. It would remove a physical option from the backfield. And it could mean giving up on a developmental player before Dallas has fully discovered what he might eventually become. Still, Schottenheimer has made it clear that effort and potential alone will not be enough to guarantee any player’s role. Speaking carefully but firmly, Schottenheimer addressed the broader standard without directly confirming any roster decision. “We respect every player who comes into this building and fights for a role. But the standard here is bigger than effort alone. It is about consistency, execution, and whether every piece fits the direction we are building. If something does not match that, we have to protect the team first.” Mafah remains intriguing because of his toughness and willingness to accept physical work. His size gives Dallas a potential option in short-yardage situations. He can provide depth, absorb difficult carries, and potentially contribute when injuries force adjustments elsewhere in the backfield. But the Cowboys are trying to build more than emergency options. Dallas wants an offense built on timing, physicality, versatility, and explosive possibilities. That means every running back must fit not only the playbook, but also the larger offensive vision. For Mafah, that could mean demonstrating that he can provide value beyond simply carrying the football between the tackles. Pass protection, receiving ability, special teams contributions, and consistency during practice could become important factors when coaches begin making their final evaluations. If Dallas ultimately decides to move on, the decision would send a clear message across the locker room. It would show that the Cowboys are willing to challenge even promising young players if they believe the roster needs a sharper direction. The move would not simply be about creating space. It would be about setting a tone. Potential does not guarantee security. Physical talent does not erase evaluation. And in Dallas, the standard under Brian Schottenheimer appears to be enforced at every level of the roster.
