Just Hours After Being Released by the Vikings, Raiders Complete $8 Million-Plus Deal With Young Super Bowl Champion Running Back

Posted Aug 21, 2026

The Las Vegas Raiders shocked the NFL world by finalizing an agreement worth more than $8 million with Cam Akers just hours after the Minnesota Vikings announced his release.

At a critical point in the season, with Las Vegas looking to regain momentum and strengthen its playoff aspirations, the move represents a major statement from head coach Klint Kubiak and the Raiders organization.

Instead of waiting for more opportunities to develop, Las Vegas moved quickly to secure a veteran running back with championship experience and the ability to immediately contribute to the offense.

Akers arrived in Las Vegas with a resume that convinced the team he could become an important piece in their postseason pursuit.

During the 2022 season, Akers recorded 786 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, emerging as one of the most productive offensive weapons for the Rams during the final stretch of the year.

But more importantly, he understands what it takes to win at the highest level.

Akers was part of the Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl championship team during the 2021 season, an experience that few young running backs in the NFL can claim.

For Las Vegas, that championship experience was one of the biggest reasons behind the decision.

During his first media appearance as a Raiders player, Akers showed emotion while explaining why he chose Las Vegas despite receiving interest from other teams.

“There were opportunities that could have offered more money, and I respect every team that believed in me. But when Las Vegas showed me they believed in the player I can still become, that meant something different. I’m not coming here just to fill a roster spot. I’m coming here to prove that my best football is still ahead of me and help this team chase something special.”

The message immediately connected with Raiders fans.

Many supporters believed Akers’ decision showed that his motivation was about more than financial security.

They believe he came to Las Vegas searching for a new opportunity and a chance to prove his value once again on one of football’s biggest stages.

Head coach Klint Kubiak reportedly played an important role in convincing the running back that Las Vegas was the right destination.

The Raiders were looking for a player who could provide versatility, experience, and toughness during the most important part of the season.

Akers brings explosive speed, strong vision, and the ability to create plays even when defenses close running lanes.

His playoff experience could also provide valuable leadership for younger players preparing for moments of maximum pressure.

For Las Vegas, the signing represents another aggressive move toward building a roster with championship expectations.

For Cam Akers, it represents something even more important.

It is an opportunity to rebuild his reputation, prove his critics wrong, and write a new chapter wearing the Silver and Black.

And if Brian Kubiak’s decision pays off, this move could become one of the most important additions Las Vegas has made on its path toward the Super Bowl.

SAD NEWS: Las Vegas Raiders Part Ways With Three Veteran Players Amid Their Roster Flexibility and Youth Movement Plan
Las Vegas, Nevada — The Las Vegas Raiders entered Wednesday morning with an announcement that cast a heavy atmosphere over Allegiant Stadium. The team confirmed it will part ways with three players, marking a significant turning point in its ongoing roster restructuring process. According to internal sources, the three players have officially been placed on the team’s trade block just before the final stretch of the preseason. The decision comes as head coach Klint Kubiak and the front office continue to push toward greater roster flexibility and a stronger commitment to developing younger talent. Dare Ogunbowale, Dont'e Thornton Jr., and Adam Butler are the three players who are no longer viewed as central pieces of the Raiders’ long-term plans. The announcement quickly sparked a strong reaction throughout Raiders Nation, where fans have always valued toughness, loyalty, and players who contribute to the team’s identity. For the loyal Las Vegas fanbase, this is more than just a personnel move. It is also a reminder that the NFL is a business built around difficult decisions and constant competition. General manager and team executives are believed to have carefully evaluated every option before making what could become a controversial move, while accelerating roster discussions to create additional flexibility and prepare for final cuts. Dare Ogunbowale has been valued for his versatility, experience, and ability to contribute in multiple situations. His special teams impact and reliability as a veteran presence gave the Raiders important depth, but the emergence of younger running backs has changed the outlook of the position. With the organization focused on developing younger offensive weapons, Ogunbowale’s role became increasingly difficult to secure within the team’s long-term plans. Dont'e Thornton Jr. entered the Raiders organization with intriguing physical tools, including size, speed, and the ability to stretch the field vertically. However, increased competition among young wide receivers and the team’s desire to prioritize players with larger long-term roles have made his future in Las Vegas uncertain. The Raiders believe the receiver position has several emerging talents capable of taking on expanded responsibilities moving forward. Adam Butler provided valuable veteran leadership and experience on the defensive interior. Known for his professionalism, toughness, and ability to help younger defensive linemen develop, Butler remained a respected figure inside the locker room. However, the team’s emphasis on youth, salary cap considerations, and the development of younger defensive tackles have made his role less certain heading into the future. These three decisions reflect the Raiders’ new direction, where youth, athletic ability, and long-term roster flexibility have become top priorities. Las Vegas now continues building around a younger core on both sides of the football, creating greater competition throughout the final weeks of training camp. Moving on from veteran players also allows the organization to create additional financial flexibility in an increasingly challenging salary cap environment. "Building a successful team isn’t only about adding new talent. It’s also about having the courage to make difficult decisions when those choices are necessary for the future of the organization." For longtime Raiders fans, disappointment is inevitable after seeing these players contribute while wearing the Silver and Black. However, professional football rarely allows organizations to remain unchanged for long, especially when championship expectations continue to rise. The Raiders front office has shown a willingness to make difficult decisions in order to protect the franchise’s future and create a stronger foundation. The team is expected to continue exploring potential trade opportunities or allow these players to pursue new opportunities elsewhere if no deal materializes. Although their departures come under difficult circumstances, Ogunbowale, Thornton Jr., and Butler have earned respect from teammates, coaches, and everyone inside the Raiders locker room. A new era in Las Vegas is gradually taking shape, and it begins with decisions that are never easy.
