Steelers’ 2025 Rookie Star Faces Shocking Risk of Missing the 53-Man Roster — An Unbelievable Turn After Experts Once Predicted He Could Become the Team’s Future RB1

Posted Aug 20, 2026

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering the most important stage of their 2026 offseason, and one unexpected name has become the center of attention: running back Kaleb Johnson.

Just one year after being viewed as a potential cornerstone of Pittsburgh’s offense, the young running back is now fighting to secure his place on the team’s 53-man roster.

Johnson entered the NFL with significant expectations after the Steelers selected him in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Many analysts believed he had the tools to become a future lead running back because of his size, explosiveness, and physical running style.

However, Johnson’s rookie season did not unfold the way many expected, as he struggled to establish a consistent role within Pittsburgh’s offensive system.

During the 2025 season, Johnson recorded only 69 rushing yards on 28 carries, averaging just 2.5 yards per attempt, far below the expectations surrounding him.

He also contributed only one reception for nine yards, limiting his overall impact and making his role within the offense increasingly uncertain.

More concerning, Johnson was made inactive multiple times despite being healthy during the final stretch of the 2025 season.

Entering the 2026 training camp, Johnson no longer has a guaranteed position as the Steelers continue evaluating their running back room.

Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle are widely viewed as the two backs most likely to secure roster spots entering the upcoming season.

That leaves Johnson competing directly with Lew Nichols, Eli Heidenreich, and Travis Homer for the remaining opportunities.

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy never directly labeled Johnson as a roster bubble player, but his comments clearly indicated the young back is under pressure.

“He’ll play more in these upcoming games. We want to give our young players the opportunity to prove they belong on this football team,” McCarthy told reporters.

That statement immediately drew attention because established roster players typically do not need extensive preseason opportunities to secure their positions.

During Pittsburgh’s first preseason matchup, Johnson played only three snaps and finished with two rushing attempts for three yards.

McCarthy later joked that if the person calling the plays had run the ball more, Johnson might have received more opportunities to showcase his ability.

But behind the lighthearted comment was a serious reality: Johnson needs to make an immediate impact to convince the coaching staff he deserves a roster spot.

Unlike some of his competitors, Johnson has not yet shown significant value on special teams, an area that often determines the fate of depth players.

Travis Homer holds an advantage because of his special teams experience, meaning Johnson must clearly separate himself as an offensive weapon.

With two preseason games remaining, Kaleb Johnson faces the most important challenge of his young NFL career.

A player once viewed as the future of Pittsburgh’s backfield must now prove he belongs in the Steelers’ long-term plans.

Former Steelers 2x All-Pro Unhappy in Buccaneers, Sends Emotional Message Hinting at Pittsburgh Return
TAMPA BAY — A familiar name has suddenly returned to the center of conversation among Pittsburgh Steelers fans this week. That name is Miles Killebrew, the former Steelers special teams star whose emotional message has quickly reignited speculation about a possible return to the franchise where he built his reputation as one of the NFL’s most respected special teams leaders. Late Monday night, Killebrew posted a short but powerful message that immediately spread across Steelers social media circles. “Some places become more than football. They become family. The people, the memories, the battles — those things stay with you forever. Pittsburgh will always have a special place in my heart. 🖤💛 #SteelersNation” The post was accompanied by a black-and-white highlight video featuring Killebrew’s most memorable moments in a Steelers uniform. There were special teams tackles, emotional celebrations, sideline leadership moments, and scenes from inside Acrisure Stadium that reminded fans why he became such an important part of the Steelers culture. For many supporters in Pittsburgh, the message did not feel like simple nostalgia. It felt like a player quietly reflecting on a place where he found his football identity. Killebrew became one of the NFL’s most reliable special teams players during his time with the Steelers, earning a reputation for toughness, preparation and relentless effort on every snap. During his Pittsburgh tenure, he recorded some of the league’s most impactful special teams performances, earned two All-Pro selections, became a respected team captain and emerged as one of the strongest voices inside the locker room. Although his role was not always measured through traditional statistics, Killebrew represented the type of player the Steelers organization has valued for decades — disciplined, physical and willing to sacrifice for team success. After leaving Pittsburgh, Killebrew continued his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who added him for his leadership, versatility and championship-level experience on special teams. However, questions have recently grown about whether his role in Tampa Bay has matched the importance he once carried in Pittsburgh. That uncertainty has made his emotional message even louder among Steelers fans who still believe his leadership could help the team. "Some players leave a franchise, but the connection never truly disappears. The impact of a leader is not only measured by statistics or highlights. It is measured by trust, preparation and the way teammates respond when that player enters the locker room. Those qualities are difficult to replace and often bring players back to where they were most valued." Within hours, Steelers supporters flooded social media with messages asking the organization to consider a reunion. Many fans argued that Pittsburgh has always placed a premium on experienced leaders who understand accountability, special teams excellence and the expectations that come with wearing the black and gold. A potential return, however, would depend on Pittsburgh’s roster needs, salary considerations and whether the Steelers believe they need another veteran presence heading into the season. No official discussions between Killebrew and the Steelers have been confirmed, and he remains under contract with Tampa Bay. Still, in the NFL, emotional messages often create conversations before front offices ever make decisions. Killebrew did not criticize the Buccaneers. He did not demand a trade. He simply reminded Steelers Nation that some bonds survive even after a player changes uniforms. And for fans in black and gold, that was enough to reopen the dream of seeing one of their most respected leaders return home.
