After Receiving an Attractive Trade Package Including a First-Round Pick and a Backup Player from Former OC Ben Johnson, Detroit Lions Officially Make Final Decision on Their First-Round Superstar

Posted May 23, 2026

Detroit, Michigan – In a major development during the 2026 NFL offseason, Detroit Lions have officially ended many weeks of speculation surrounding the future of one of the most beloved young offensive weapons on the team.

The attractive trade package from the Chicago Bears, led by former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, has forced Lions leadership to seriously consider this offer.

The Bears proposed a first-round pick along with a quality backup player in exchange for the young star.

After a long period of behind-the-scenes negotiations and careful deliberation, Lions finally made their pivotal decision.

The team has decided to reject the offer and keep this important player on the roster.

Sam LaPorta, the standout tight end selected by the Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft, was at the center of the entire story.

The 24-year-old player quickly became one of the hottest topics across the NFL as trade rumors intensified.

Ben Johnson, who played an important role in developing LaPorta into a star while still in Detroit, expressed strong interest in reuniting and viewed LaPorta as the ideal piece to elevate the Bears’ offense revolving around Caleb Williams.

With reliable hands, excellent blocking ability and high football IQ, LaPorta was highly valued by Johnson. Only after three NFL seasons, he has recorded more than 180 receptions, more than 2,000 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.

However, the trade rumors left LaPorta extremely dissatisfied. According to sources close to the player, he has made a strong statement expressing absolute loyalty to the Lions:

“IF THEY TRADE ME TO THE BEARS, I’LL RETIRE ON THE SPOT.”

This statement has caused a major shock in the Lions fan community and created significant pressure on the team’s leadership. LaPorta is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2026 with a cap hit of approximately $6.74 million.

In the context of salary cap pressure and the need to accumulate more draft picks, Lions initially appeared willing to listen to offers. The package from the Bears was considered quite attractive, providing valuable draft capital and salary relief.

However, Lions ultimately chose to keep LaPorta. This decision is seen as a clear message about the team’s future direction.

Lions leadership affirmed that Sam LaPorta is an important cornerstone in the Jared Goff era. They believe he will continue to develop and become a long-term foundation of the offense alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown and the young receiving group.

The decision to retain LaPorta shows that Lions prioritize stability and loyalty over short-term gains from a trade. This is also a positive signal sent to young players in the organization.

Ben Johnson, though disappointed, must respect the Lions’ choice. The former offensive coordinator of Detroit understands the culture and spirit of this organization.

By keeping LaPorta, Lions hope he will have another breakout season and continue to be an important part of the team’s offensive identity.

Lions fans are extremely excited with this decision. Many believe that retaining young talent like LaPorta is the smartest move at this time.

The future of Sam LaPorta in Detroit is now clearer than ever. He will continue to stay and contribute to the Lions’ Super Bowl ambitions.

This is a decision that could completely change the trajectory of the franchise in the coming years, affirming that the Lions are building a solid foundation around their young core.

SAD NEWS: Green Bay Packers Officially Cut Contracts with 4 Veteran Players in the Context of Matt LaFleur’s Team Rebuilding Plan Being Increasingly Pushed Forward.
Green Bay, WI — The Green Bay Packers continue to make tough roster decisions as positional competition becomes increasingly fierce during the OTAs phase and training camp preparation. According to sources from league circles, the Packers have officially cut 4 players from the projected 53-man roster as the team is actively rebuilding both sides of the ball for the 2026 season. The players being cut include: Bo Melton (WR) Keisean Nixon (CB) Sean Rhyan (OL) Karl Brooks (DL) These moves clearly show that the Packers are strongly accelerating the process of roster youth movement and optimization after a disappointing 2025 season in which the team failed to achieve the expected playoff goal. One of the most surprising names is Bo Melton. Although he has contributed well on special teams and possesses considerable speed, he has become a victim of extremely strong competition at the wide receiver position. The Packers currently possess a very crowded receiving room with: Christian Watson Jayden Reed Matthew Golden Savion Williams In addition, rookie J. Michael Sturdivant and other UDFA rookies are creating significant buzz during the offseason. The team highly values the long-term upside of younger players in terms of physicality and development potential. On defense, the Packers are also parting ways with veteran cornerback Keisean Nixon. His position has become increasingly unstable after the team added depth to the secondary through the draft and waivers (Brandon Cisse, MJ Devonshire, Marlon Jones). Nixon has had issues with injuries and inconsistent performance recently. The team is building a younger secondary led by Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, and the new rookie cornerbacks. One loss on the offensive side is Sean Rhyan (Offensive Lineman). After signing Aaron Banks and developing young tackles like Jordan Morgan and Brant Banks, the Packers have decided to prioritize flexibility and the potential of younger players. Rhyan was unable to separate himself from the highly competitive depth chart group. Perhaps the most shocking name is Karl Brooks (DL). Although he entered the league with high expectations, he has not yet become the disruptive force the team had hoped for. After adding Javon Hargrave, Chris McClellan, retaining Devonte Wyatt, along with the presence of Micah Parsons at edge, the roster space for Brooks has shrunk significantly. These moves reflect the urgency of the Packers in rebuilding the team after last season. With Jordan Love at the center, Matt LaFleur and the coaching staff are determined to create a younger, faster, and more explosive roster.
