Entire Cubs Team Prays for Dansby Swanson as His Injury Is Revealed to Be More Serious Than Expected, Chicago’s Star Shortstop Faces the Risk of Missing the Rest of the Season

CHICAGO The Chicago Cubs are facing one of the most concerning developments of the late season after Dansby Swanson’s condition was revealed to be more serious than initially expected.

Swanson exited Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals after experiencing an issue with his left oblique during a swing in the third inning.

Immediately after the swing, the 32 year old veteran clearly showed discomfort, threw down his helmet and left the game before being replaced by James Triantos.

The sight immediately raised concern for the Cubs because Swanson rarely leaves a game unless he feels the issue is serious enough.

Manager Craig Counsell later confirmed that Chicago’s starting shortstop would be placed on the Injured List because of the left oblique injury.

Further evaluations increased the level of concern, as this type of injury can require four to six weeks of recovery, and potentially even longer depending on the severity of the damage.

That means Swanson is now facing the possibility of missing the remainder of the 2026 regular season.

The atmosphere inside the Cubs clubhouse was described as particularly heavy as teammates waited for more information about one of the team’s most important leaders.

Several players were described as sending messages of encouragement and prayers to Swanson, hoping his recovery would progress faster than the concerning initial projections.

Swanson’s absence would create a significant hole on defense.

He is regarded as one of the best defensive shortstops in MLB and has won two Gold Glove Awards.

During the 2026 season, Swanson has played 118 games, posting a slash line of .216, .300 and .404, along with 18 home runs, 66 RBI and 17 stolen bases.

But his value goes far beyond his offensive numbers.

Swanson’s fielding ability, defensive range and consistency have helped the Cubs maintain the structure of their infield throughout the postseason race.

Counsell has previously emphasized that Swanson is one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball and an extremely important piece for Chicago.

If he is forced to miss an extended period, Nico Hoerner is expected to move to shortstop to help the Cubs fill the void.

However, making a positional change at this point in the season could still affect the stability of the entire infield as Chicago enters the most important weeks of the year.

The Cubs remain firmly in the postseason race, but the gap between them and the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central makes every game increasingly important.

The possibility of losing Swanson until the playoffs could therefore become one of the biggest challenges Chicago has to overcome.

What the Cubs need now is not only a replacement option on the field, but also patience as they wait for Swanson to fully recover.

And as the remainder of the season enters its decisive stage, all of Chicago can only hope that one of its most reliable leaders still has a chance to return before it is too late.
