Green Bay, Wisconsin – The Packers have announced the signing of a Green Bay native, returning to join the coaching staff and reinforce the defense, preparing for the ultimate goal: their fifth Super Bowl in the 2026 season.
This move is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen defensive depth and ensure the Packers have a roster capable of competing at the highest level in the championship race.
Packers fans quickly expressed excitement knowing a familiar face will contribute to the hometown team, promising energy, valuable experience, and strategic guidance for the linebackers.
The individual, who has spent extensive time in the NFL and NCAA, will assume the role of defensive coordinator, where he can directly influence tactics and develop the Packers’ top defensive players.
Sam Siefkes, a Wisconsin native, grew up in Oconomowoc and has been a long-time Packers fan. He played at Wisconsin-La Crosse, later became a student assistant, then left the state to serve as a defensive/special teams quality control coach at Florida International.

He returned to Wisconsin in 2015, serving as a graduate assistant under Dave Aranda, then led Wisconsin-Platteville as defensive coordinator, guiding the team into the Division III playoffs in 2016.
Siefkes continued his career at the Division I FCS level with the Wofford Terriers, where he helped the team lead the Southern Conference in total defense, scoring defense, and both rushing and passing defense in back-to-back seasons 2018–2019, bringing Wofford to the Southern Conference Championship.
The 2020 season was postponed due to COVID-19. Siefkes moved to the NFL, joining the Minnesota Vikings as defensive quality control coach, then became their assistant linebackers coach in 2021.
After the 2022 season, Siefkes spent two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, helping their defense become one of the top units in the NFL in 2024.
Before the 2025 season, he was appointed defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, although the team struggled under head coach Brent Pry and finished 3-6 in the final portion of the season before being signed by the Packers.
The Packers prioritized defense in the summer transfer window, bringing in veterans like Zaire Franklin, Javon Hargrave, Benjamin St-Juste, and draft picks Brandon Cisse, Chris McClellan, Dani Dennis-Sutton, and Domani Jackson.
With Siefkes’ experience and accomplishments, the Packers’ linebacker corps, including Franklin, Edgerrin Cooper, and Ty’Ron Hopper, is expected to thrive, laying the foundation for the Super Bowl run.
He emphasizes a personalized coaching approach: "Not all guys learn the same. Coaches don't learn the same, and players don't learn the same. So my job is to cater to all of the players."
The Packers will benefit from Siefkes’ deep understanding of Green Bay football culture and spirit, helping players connect more deeply with the organization and creating a competitive, adaptable defense.
He is one of two Wisconsin natives on the coaching staff, alongside OC Adam Stenavich, highlighting the emotional and strategic significance of “coming home.”
Fans are anticipating that Siefkes will bring NFL and NCAA experience into the defensive strategy, providing an edge against NFC North rivals and in key playoff matchups.
The combination of a young, talented coach and a seasoned defensive unit promises to elevate the Packers in the 2026 Super Bowl race.
His experience leading Wofford to the Southern Conference title and guiding Platteville into the Division III playoffs establishes Siefkes as a game-changing defensive coordinator with clear Super Bowl potential.
Packers players are expected to benefit directly from his personalized coaching, enhancing situational awareness and team coordination.
The Packers aim not only to fortify their defense but also to deepen the roster, ensuring optimal preparation for the ambitious 2026 season and the pursuit of their fifth Super Bowl.
Siefkes’ return represents Wisconsin pride and the Packers’ long-term commitment to glory, reinforcing the spirit of homegrown talent and a sustainable development strategy.
