LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Las Vegas Raiders have finalized their official 53-man roster ahead of the 2026 NFL regular season, but the final decisions made by head coach Klint Kubiak have created one of the most difficult moments of the offseason.
As teams across the league completed their final roster evaluations, the Raiders faced several challenging choices involving experienced players who had fought throughout training camp for their place on the team.
With competition increasing at multiple positions, Las Vegas had to balance veteran experience with the development of younger talent and new additions expected to play major roles moving forward.
The quarterback position became one of the most closely watched battles during the final weeks of preparation. Under Kubiak’s system, every player was evaluated based on performance, consistency, and long-term fit with the organization’s plans.
According to sources around the team, the Raiders coaching staff held several difficult discussions before officially completing the 53-man roster. Two familiar names who had hoped to remain part of the team’s future plans ultimately saw their chances disappear before Week 1.
The first name was Aidan O'Connell, the veteran quarterback who had previously played an important role for the Raiders.
O'Connell entered the offseason facing increased competition after the arrival of Kirk Cousins and rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza. With multiple options available at the quarterback position, his path to securing a roster spot became increasingly difficult under Kubiak’s new offensive structure.
Despite his preparation, professionalism, and previous experience leading the Raiders offense, O'Connell was unable to separate himself enough during the competition. The team ultimately considered moving him through a potential trade or making the difficult decision to remove him from the final roster.
The second player affected by the roster decision was Dare Ogunbowale, a veteran running back competing for a depth role behind young star Ashton Jeanty.
Ogunbowale brought valuable experience, versatility, and leadership to the running back room. However, with the Raiders prioritizing younger talent and evaluating the future of the position, the veteran found himself facing a difficult battle for one of the limited roster spots available.
For Klint Kubiak, the decision was not about ignoring the contributions of experienced players. Instead, it reflected the difficult reality of building a roster capable of competing throughout a demanding NFL season.
"These are moments that no coach ever wants to go through. They gave everything they had every single day, and their professionalism meant a great deal to this football team. Having to tell experienced players that they are no longer part of the 53-man roster is extremely difficult," Kubiak said.
The decisions immediately generated reactions among Raiders fans, many of whom appreciated the commitment and professionalism shown by both players during their time with the organization.
However, the Raiders believe the final roster represents the direction they want to take under Kubiak, combining young talent, athletic ability, and players who fit the team’s long-term vision.
Now, Las Vegas turns its attention toward Week 1, entering the 2026 season with a reshaped roster and a renewed focus on building a competitive foundation for the future.
