Inglewood, California — Every year in June, the NFL organizes Pride Month with communication campaigns, social media activities, and community programs aimed at promoting inclusion in football.
Many NFL teams have begun participating in Pride-themed photo shoots during the 2026 season preparation period, as part of the league’s “Football for All” campaign.
However, a Los Angeles Rams rookie has unexpectedly become the center of controversy after refusing to participate in one of the NFL’s Pride Month commemorative photo shoots.
According to multiple sources, rookie Ty Simpson — the quarterback selected by the Rams in the first round (13th overall) of the 2026 NFL Draft — publicly explained his reason during an off-season media interview.
“Football should focus on the field, competition, and winning at the highest possible level. I respect everyone, but personally I believe that this sport should never be tied to political or social messages,” Simpson said.

His words quickly spread strongly across social media, sparking a heated debate among Rams fans and the NFL community just weeks before the official training camp begins.
One group of fans strongly supports Simpson, arguing that players should never be forced to participate in any social campaigns if they feel uncomfortable. In contrast, many others harshly criticize the rookie, claiming he has “undermined” the league’s spirit of inclusion.
Ty Simpson enters the NFL with high expectations after the Rams selected him with the 13th overall pick. As a first-round quarterback out of Alabama, Simpson is viewed as a high-upside talent with strong arm strength, athleticism, and leadership qualities. He is expected to develop behind Matthew Stafford and compete for playing time in the near future.
In his final college season at Alabama, Simpson showed clear progress as a starter, particularly in accuracy, decision-making, and big-time throws. Many experts believe he has the potential to become a long-term franchise quarterback for the Rams under head coach Sean McVay.
As of now, both the Los Angeles Rams and the NFL have not issued any official comments on the incident. However, the controversy surrounding Ty Simpson has deeply divided a portion of the NFL community regarding the boundary between players’ personal freedom and the league’s promoted social campaigns.
Many former players and some current NFL stars have quietly supported Simpson on social media, emphasizing that participation in Pride activities is optional, not mandatory.
Despite not having played a single NFL game yet, Ty Simpson has already become one of the most attention-grabbing and controversial rookies ahead of the 2026 season.
