The New Orleans Saints just caused a major surprise by finalizing a contract described as “unprecedented in NFL history” with two-time All-Pro kicker Daniel Carlson.
The deal came only a few days after Charlie Smyth rejected the team’s proposal to restructure his contract.
Smyth had shown inconsistent performance throughout training camp. His field-goal success rate reached only 68%, gradually causing the coaching staff to lose confidence.

The Saints had previously given Smyth a three-year contract worth $9.6 million with $4.2 million guaranteed. However, the lack of consistency forced them to seek another option.
Daniel Carlson appeared at the right time. Over eight seasons with the Raiders, he converted 229 of 258 field-goal attempts (88.8%) and scored a total of 1,147 points.
He earned two All-Pro selections, led the NFL in field goals from beyond 50 yards for three consecutive seasons, and holds the Raiders record with 18 makes from 55 yards or longer.
The Saints’ decision to sign him is viewed as a decisive move to end the prolonged instability at the kicker position.
What makes the deal special is the contract structure. The Saints offered a three-year agreement worth $18.75 million, including $11.5 million fully guaranteed.
The “unprecedented” element lies in the flexible clause: Carlson has the right to trigger a fourth-year option at $7.8 million if he achieves a field-goal percentage of 90% or higher in the first two seasons.
In addition, the contract contains a special protection clause that allows him to become an early free agent if the team fails to reach the playoffs in two consecutive years — a provision never before seen for a kicker in the NFL.
Kellen Moore is believed to have personally pushed for the deal. He wants absolute stability on special teams heading into the new season.
Saints fans have reacted quite positively. They see it as a signal that the front office is not afraid to make strong and creative decisions.
Meanwhile, Charlie Smyth’s future remains unclear. Refusing the restructure could cost him a spot on the 53-man roster.
For Daniel Carlson, this is a chance to write a new chapter in his career as a kicking superstar. For the Saints, it is a clear effort to build stability.
An “unprecedented” contract has just been signed. The remaining question is whether it will deliver the certainty New Orleans desperately needs.
