INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — The Indianapolis Colts have made a difficult roster decision just weeks before the start of training camp.
According to team sources, cornerback Jaylon Jones has been removed from the active roster after suffering a recurrence of a previous injury during offseason workouts.
The setback comes at a critical point in Jones' career as he was expected to compete for a significant role in Indianapolis' secondary entering the 2026 season.
Selected by the Colts in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Jones quickly exceeded expectations during his time in Indianapolis.
Over three seasons, he appeared in 46 games, recording 163 total tackles, 24 pass breakups, 4 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and multiple starts against some of the league's top offenses.
His versatility allowed him to play both outside cornerback and nickel coverage assignments.
Coaches frequently praised his toughness, football intelligence, and willingness to compete against elite receivers.
However, injuries repeatedly interrupted his development and prevented him from establishing long term consistency within the defense.
Recent medical evaluations reportedly revealed that the previous issue had resurfaced, forcing the organization to prioritize both roster flexibility and the player's long term health.
The timing is especially challenging for Jones given the significant changes the Colts have made to their secondary this offseason.
Indianapolis has added several young defensive backs and increased competition throughout the cornerback room heading into training camp.
As a result, the organization ultimately chose to move forward without Jones on the active roster.
Despite the disappointing outcome, many within the organization remain supportive of the young cornerback.
Teammates and coaches have reportedly praised his professionalism, work ethic, and perseverance throughout multiple rehabilitation processes.
For the Colts, the move creates additional opportunities for younger players fighting for roster spots.
For Jaylon Jones, the focus now shifts toward recovery and determining the next step in his NFL future.
Although injuries altered his path in Indianapolis, his contributions and resilience will not soon be forgotten by the organization.
