Once Viewed as a First-Round Bust and Facing the Risk of Losing His Starting Role, $14 Million Star Deonte Banks Earns Back Starting Job With the New York Giants After Major Coaching Changes

New York, New York — Deonte Banks entered the 2026 season facing some of the biggest doubts of his young NFL career, but the Giants cornerback now has an opportunity to prove his critics wrong.

After a difficult previous season, Banks entered 2026 with his starting position in serious jeopardy as the Giants added new talent and reshaped their defensive secondary.

The Giants previously declined to exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract worth $12.6 million, leading many around the league to believe Banks’ future in New York was becoming uncertain.

However, the arrival of head coach John Harbaugh and a new defensive system created a major turning point, allowing Banks to regain confidence and showcase his abilities.

The Giants’ latest depth chart revealed a surprising development, with Banks reclaiming his starting cornerback position ahead of Paulson Adebo, who previously signed a $54 million contract.

ESPN reported that Banks impressed throughout training camp because of his ability to adapt quickly to defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson’s new scheme.

“Deonte Banks has always had special traits. Our job is to help him maximize his speed, competitiveness, and ability to make game-changing plays,” a Giants coaching staff member said.

Banks was selected No. 24 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft after an impressive career at Maryland, where he gained attention for running a 4.35-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.

However, his NFL journey has not unfolded as expected, as concerns about consistency, physical matchups against bigger receivers, and overall reliability affected his reputation.

The 2025 season was especially challenging for Banks, as he lost his starting role and was forced into a backup position while trying to rebuild trust with the Giants organization.

Now, with a fresh opportunity under Harbaugh, Banks must prove that his resurgence is not simply a temporary moment created by a new coaching staff.

His first major test arrives in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, where he could face one of football’s most dangerous receivers, All-Pro CeeDee Lamb.

If Banks continues developing under the new system, the 2026 season could become the defining chapter of his career, transforming him from a former first-round disappointment into a cornerstone of the Giants defense.
