Buffalo, New York — The New York Giants made one of the most surprising roster decisions before the 2026 season when they released veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton after seven years with the franchise.

The timing created immediate controversy because Slayton was released just days before the regular-season opener, despite being one of the most productive receivers in Giants history.
Slayton finished his Giants career with 296 receptions, 4,435 receiving yards, and 22 touchdowns, ranking among the franchise’s top receivers in multiple statistical categories.
However, the arrival of new head coach John Harbaugh changed the offensive structure, and Slayton reportedly struggled to secure a consistent role under the new coaching staff.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Slayton started the offseason strongly but never fully adjusted to the expectations of Harbaugh’s new system after returning from core muscle surgery.

The Giants’ decision became more understandable after the team added additional receiving weapons, including Darnell Mooney in free agency and the return of Odell Beckham Jr.
The relationship between Slayton and Harbaugh became a major talking point, as the veteran receiver reportedly fell out of favor while the new coaching staff evaluated the roster.
Slayton had previously signed a three-year, $36 million contract extension with New York in 2025, making his sudden departure even more surprising for fans.
Despite the disappointing ending, Slayton remained respectful toward the organization, posting a message thanking the Giants and expressing appreciation for his seven seasons in New York.
"I’ll always be grateful for my time in New York. Seven years with the Giants gave me unforgettable memories, incredible teammates, and a connection with the fans that I will never forget."
The veteran receiver now enters the market looking for his next opportunity, with teams reportedly showing early interest in adding his experience and ability as a deep threat.
For the Giants, the move represents another major transition under Harbaugh as the franchise continues building a new identity around its younger core and offensive vision.
